AirVPN Review 2026

Open-source VPN for advanced users

AirVPN has run since 2010, when a group of Italian activists and hacktivists built it around a narrow proposition: a VPN for privacy and freedom of expression rather than one aimed at the mass market. It is operated by Air, the company of Paolo Brini, and nearly every decision since has favoured the technically confident user over the newcomer.

The focus shows in what it does well. P2P is allowed on every server, port forwarding is available, all ports and protocols are open, and OpenVPN can be tunnelled over SSL or SSH to get through networks that block VPN traffic outright. The trade-offs are equally clear: the network is small, five devices connect at once, streaming is unreliable, and the apps assume you already know what a protocol is.

// BACKGROUND

Who Builds AirVPN and Where It Is Based

AirVPN was founded in 2010 by Italian activists and hacktivists, and it is run by Air, the company of Paolo Brini. That origin is not marketing colour, it is the best single explanation of the product. A service built by people whose starting concern was freedom of expression ends up prioritising open ports, censorship circumvention and anonymous payment, and ends up caring rather less about a polished onboarding flow.

The jurisdiction is Italy, which is in the EU and a member of the 14 Eyes intelligence-sharing arrangement. That is a genuine mark against it and we are not going to argue otherwise. The counterweight is worth stating just as plainly: AirVPN operates a strict no-logs policy, describes it transparently, and has held a strong reputation on that point across fifteen years of operation. A provider that keeps no session or activity logs has correspondingly little to hand over, whoever asks.

What AirVPN does not have is a formal independent audit from one of the large accounting or security firms. Several providers in our best VPNs for privacy guide do publish one, and that is the difference between a well-regarded policy and a checked one. For how logging, jurisdiction and audit evidence combine into the privacy score above, see our scoring methodology.

// SECURITY

Encryption, Protocols and Open Ports

Encryption is AES-256-GCM and ChaCha20-Poly1305, with Perfect Forward Secrecy, so a compromise of one session key does not unlock traffic captured earlier. Both are current, well-reviewed choices rather than anything proprietary, and ChaCha20-Poly1305 in particular performs better on hardware without AES acceleration, which usually means phones and older machines.

Both OpenVPN and WireGuard are supported, and AirVPN confirms both on its own site. That matters more than a long protocol list would: these are the two protocols the wider security community has actually examined, and having both means you can trade WireGuard's speed against OpenVPN's flexibility depending on the network you are on.

The less common capability is that AirVPN allows all ports and all protocols, and can tunnel OpenVPN over SSL or SSH. Most providers restrict at least some ports. Leaving them open is what makes port forwarding, self-hosted services and awkward application traffic work without special handling, and the SSL and SSH tunnelling modes are what get a connection through a network that blocks VPNs on sight.

// NETWORK

A Small Network, Openly Documented

This is the clearest weakness. AirVPN runs roughly 200 or so servers across about 23 countries, against the thousands of servers and sixty-plus countries mainstream competitors advertise. If you need an exit in a specific country, check AirVPN's list before you subscribe rather than after, because the odds of a gap are meaningfully higher here than with a large provider.

The counter-argument is that AirVPN publishes live per-server statistics, so load and availability are visible before you connect rather than guessed at. Few providers expose that. A smaller network you can actually inspect is a different proposition from a large one you cannot, though it does not make the country list any longer.

We do not publish a precise fleet figure for AirVPN, because the total moves and the company reports it live rather than as a headline number. Treat the count in the spec table as approximate. For how the small network compares against every other provider we score, see the full VPN rankings.

// TORRENTING

Torrenting and Port Forwarding

Torrenting is where AirVPN is genuinely excellent, and it is the strongest single reason to choose it. P2P is permitted on every server rather than corralled onto a subset, so there is no question of picking the right location first and no penalty for choosing the nearest one.

Port forwarding is available, which is the feature that separates a VPN tolerating torrenting from one built for it. Without a forwarded port a client can only reach peers able to accept incoming connections, which quietly limits both the number of peers available and the resulting speed. AirVPN also applies no bandwidth caps and, as above, leaves all ports open.

Together with the no-logs policy, that combination is why AirVPN keeps coming up among people who take torrenting seriously. Our best VPNs for torrenting guide sets it against the other providers that support port forwarding.

// CENSORSHIP

Getting Through Restrictive Networks

AirVPN works in China and other restrictive regions, which is not something most providers can claim reliably. The mechanism is the OpenVPN over SSL and SSH tunnelling described above: the VPN traffic is wrapped in a form that a filter looking for VPN traffic does not recognise as such.

This is a real strength rather than a marketing claim, and it comes from the same design instinct as the open ports. It does ask something of you in return, since selecting the right tunnelling mode for the network you are on is a manual decision rather than something the app resolves by itself. If connecting from a censored network is the main reason you are buying, our best VPNs for China guide covers the alternatives worth comparing against.

// PLATFORMS

Apps, Devices and the iOS Gap

AirVPN ships Eddie, its own open-source client, on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and ChromeOS. Router support is unusually broad for a provider this size, covering DD-WRT, Tomato, AsusWRT and pfSense, which is the practical way around the connection limit since a router install protects everything behind it.

iOS is the weak spot and worth knowing before you pay. There is no native Eddie app for iPhone or iPad, so an iOS device has to be set up manually with an OpenVPN or WireGuard configuration. That is entirely workable and plenty of people do it, but it is a different experience from installing an app, and it will not suit everyone in a household.

Five simultaneous connections is the allowance, and a router counts as one of the five. That is below what most competitors offer, and combined with the manual iOS setup it makes AirVPN a harder sell as the VPN for a family than as the VPN for a person.

// STREAMING

Streaming Is the Weak Spot

Streaming performance is weak and inconsistent. AirVPN is not built or marketed around catalog access, and the small network gives it far fewer addresses to rotate through when a platform starts blocking them. Expect it to work sometimes and to stop working without warning.

If watching something is a significant part of why you want a VPN, this is the wrong provider and no amount of configuration will fix it. Our best VPNs for streaming guide ranks the providers with a consistent record instead.

// PRICING

Plans, Payment and Anonymous Signup

AirVPN prices in euros, so the dollar figures in the table above move with the exchange rate and should be read as approximate rather than fixed. Roughly, the three-year term works out around $3.11 a month, one year around $4.60 a month or about $53 for the year, and a single month around $7.50.

The plan ladder is unusually flexible: 3 days, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, 2 years and 3 years. The three-day plan is the useful one to know about, because it is a cheap way to try the service on your own connection and see whether Eddie and the network suit you before committing to a longer term. We do not state a money-back guarantee length here, because we could not confirm one.

Payment includes cryptocurrency, and AirVPN supports anonymous signup, so it is possible to hold an account that is not tied to an identity. For a provider whose entire pitch is privacy that is a consistent position rather than a bolt-on, and it is one of the things that keeps AirVPN in the conversation despite the small network.

// VERDICT

Who AirVPN Is For

AirVPN suits privacy-focused users, torrenters and people connecting from censored regions who value transparency, port forwarding, all-ports support and anonymous payment, and who are comfortable configuring things themselves. On those terms it is a strong choice and has been for years.

It suits almost nobody else. If you want dependable streaming, a large country list, more than five connections or an app the rest of the household can install without help, the trade-offs land badly and a mainstream provider will serve you better. Put it next to a specific alternative on our VPN comparison tool before deciding.

// VERDICT

Bottom Line

A strong choice when the priority is privacy, torrenting or getting online from a censored network. // FAQ

AirVPN FAQ

Does AirVPN keep logs?

No. AirVPN operates a strict no-logs policy, describes it transparently, and holds no session or activity logs. It has a strong reputation on this point. What it does not have is a formal independent audit from a major firm, so the policy is well regarded rather than externally verified.

Is AirVPN good for torrenting?

Yes, this is its strongest area. P2P is allowed on every server, port forwarding is available, all ports are open and there are no bandwidth caps. See our best VPNs for torrenting guide for how it compares with other port-forwarding providers.

Does AirVPN work in China?

Yes. AirVPN works in China and other restrictive regions by tunnelling OpenVPN over SSL or SSH, which disguises the VPN traffic from filters looking for it. Choosing the right tunnelling mode for the network is a manual step rather than an automatic one.

Does AirVPN have an iOS app?

Not a native one. The Eddie client covers Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and ChromeOS, but there is no Eddie app for iPhone or iPad. An iOS device has to be configured manually with an OpenVPN or WireGuard setup.

How many devices can I use with AirVPN?

Five at the same time. A router installation counts as one of the five, so putting AirVPN on a supported router such as DD-WRT, Tomato, AsusWRT or pfSense is the practical way to cover more devices.

How much does AirVPN cost?

Pricing is set in euros, so dollar figures shift with the exchange rate. The three-year term works out around $3.11 a month, one year around $4.60 a month, and a single month around $7.50. Plan lengths run from 3 days up to 3 years, and cryptocurrency is accepted.

Is AirVPN good for streaming?

No. Streaming is weak and inconsistent, and the small server network leaves few addresses to rotate through once a platform starts blocking them. Our best VPNs for streaming guide covers the providers with a reliable record.

Where is AirVPN based?

Italy, which is in the EU and part of the 14 Eyes intelligence-sharing arrangement. That is a fair criticism of it. The offsetting point is that a provider holding no session or activity logs has little to produce if it is compelled to.
