How to Set Up a VPN on iPhone

Setting up a VPN on an iPhone takes a few minutes and does not require any technical knowledge. iOS has built-in support for VPN connections, so the provider's app does the configuration for you once you approve it.

Step by Step

  1. 01Choose a provider. This is the only decision that matters; everything after it is mechanical. Surfshark and NordVPN are the two we would point most people to.
  2. 02Download the app from the App Store. Search for the provider by name and check the developer matches before installing.
  3. 03Open it and sign in, or subscribe from inside the app if you have not already.
  4. 04Tap Allow when iOS asks permission to add a VPN configuration. This prompt is expected: it is how iOS lets an app manage the system VPN, and you may be asked for Face ID or your passcode to confirm.
  5. 05Tap connect. Most apps have a single large button, and picking a location is optional since the automatic choice is usually sensible.
  6. 06Confirm it is working. A small VPN badge appears in the status bar, and the app will show a connected state.

Two Settings Worth Turning On

Once it is connected, two options in the app's settings turn a VPN you remember to use into one that protects you by default.

The first is auto-connect on untrusted Wi-Fi, which brings the tunnel up automatically whenever you join a network you have not marked as trusted. This is the setting that covers you in airports and cafes without you thinking about it.

The second is the kill switch, which blocks traffic if the tunnel drops so nothing leaks over the normal connection. Phones move between networks constantly, which makes dropped connections more common than on a desktop. See What Is a VPN Kill Switch? for how it works.

What About Manual Setup?

iOS can also be configured by hand, under Settings, General, VPN and Device Management, using IKEv2 or a configuration profile from your provider. It is genuinely useful in a few cases, such as connecting to a corporate network or a VPN you run yourself.

For a commercial VPN it is the harder path to the same result, and you lose the app's conveniences: server switching, auto-connect and the kill switch all live in the app rather than in the iOS settings. Unless you have a specific reason, use the app.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a good free VPN for iPhone?

There are free apps, but they cap data, limit locations and are slower, and some fund themselves in ways that defeat the purpose of installing one. A paid provider's 30-day money-back guarantee is the safer way to try a VPN at no eventual cost.

Does the iPhone have a built-in VPN?

Not a VPN service, no. iOS includes the client software needed to connect to one, which is why the setup above is so short, but Apple does not provide the servers. You need either a provider's app or a manual configuration pointing at a service.
