Best VPN for Fortnite and Gaming in 2026

Hiding your IP from opponents, the server-choice trick that actually lowers ping, and why we do not claim to measure it

How we score

A gaming VPN does three useful things: it hides your IP address from other players, it can sometimes shorten the route between you and the game's data centre, and it reaches region-locked content. Most people then set it up in the way that guarantees a worse connection, and the fix is a single choice covered below. What this guide will not do is quote a millisecond figure. We score throughput, not latency, and the difference matters enough to say so first.

ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN is our pick for gaming on the figures we hold: the highest speed score we rank at 9.7, the smallest average speed drop we record at 2 percent, and a Lightway protocol built for low overhead. NordVPN is close behind on both, has the wider published network, and is the only provider we rank shipping Meshnet, which links your own machines directly for the LAN-style cases a VPN otherwise gets in the way of. Surfshark is the value pick with unlimited devices, and Proton VPN has the most places to connect from.

Connect Near the Game Server, Not Near Yourself

This is the part most guides get backwards. The instinct is to pick the VPN server closest to you, on the theory that less distance means less lag. For general browsing that is right. For gaming it often is not.

What matters is the total path from you to the game's data centre. If your internet provider routes you inefficiently, a VPN server near the game server can shorten that path; a server near yourself adds a detour before the same long trip. So find roughly where the game hosts its servers for your region and choose a VPN location near that. It is also why fleet size and country coverage matter more here than they look: the trick only works if the provider has an option in the right place. Proton VPN covers 140+ countries from 20,000+ servers, the widest coverage and largest fleet we rank, and NordVPN 127 countries from 8,800+ servers.

Protocol choice matters, and the modern ones are designed for exactly this. Every provider in our top ten lists WireGuard, the low-overhead default across the industry. Two list a proprietary variant alongside it: NordVPN's NordLynx and ExpressVPN's Lightway. Older OpenVPN connections carry more overhead and are worth avoiding for anything competitive. Beyond naming what each provider lists, we hold no comparative latency figures for these protocols and will not invent them.

One feature in our records does something a VPN tunnel normally cannot, and it is worth separating from the rest of this page. NordVPN ships Meshnet, which links your own devices to each other directly over encrypted connections rather than routing them out through a VPN server. NordVPN documents it as behaving like a local network for devices in different places, which is the case a VPN usually breaks rather than helps: playing something that expects everyone on the same LAN, or reaching a machine at home from elsewhere. It is the only feature of its kind our top ten records. Note what it is not: not a speed feature, absent from the throughput figures, and it does not change the ordering below.

Be clear about what our numbers are. The speed score and the average drop we record describe throughput: how much bandwidth a provider costs you. Ping is a different measurement and we do not make it. Throughput and latency are related but not the same, and a provider that keeps 98 percent of your bandwidth is not thereby proven to add the least delay. Treat the ordering below as the best available proxy and test on your own connection inside the refund window.

On the rules: using a VPN for privacy does not breach the terms of service of the major games. Using one to evade a ban or manipulate matchmaking does, which is a different thing and not what this guide is about. Every provider we score is compared on the main VPN rankings.

What to Look For

Speed Retained

Our speed score and the average drop we record are throughput measures, the closest proxy we hold for what a provider costs you. They are not ping.

Protocol

Modern low-overhead protocols are built for this. WireGuard is listed by all ten providers we rank, and two list a proprietary variant on top.

IP Protection

Hiding your real address stops an opponent reading it out of a peer-to-peer match. Every provider we rank does this, so it is the baseline rather than the differentiator.

Places to Connect

You want a server near the game's data centre, so country coverage and fleet size decide whether the right option exists.

Specs verified August 2026. We score throughput and record an average speed drop for each provider. We do not measure ping, latency or jitter, and no figure here is a latency measurement. Where this guide orders providers it does so on the speed data we hold, the closest proxy available rather than the thing itself.

VPNs to Avoid

CyberGhostA 15 percent average speed drop is the largest we record and an 8.6 speed score is seventh of ten. Its dedicated streaming servers and 45 day money-back window, the longest we rank, are genuine strengths pointed at a different use case.
Hide.meAn 8.2 speed score is the lowest we score and a 14 percent average drop the second largest we record: the wrong end of both figures for the one thing this guide cares about. 53 countries also gives the fewest places to aim at among the paid providers apart from Mullvad.
Mullvad VPNFive simultaneous connections is the tightest allowance we rank, exhausted by a PC, a console and a phone alone, and its 6.5 features score is the lowest we score. Excellent on privacy, built for a different priority.
Any provider chosen on a quoted ping figureWe do not measure latency, and we are sceptical of anyone publishing a single millisecond number for a provider, because the figure depends on your line, your route and the data centre you are aiming at rather than the provider alone. Test it yourself inside the refund window.
Free VPNsBandwidth caps and crowded addresses are what a real-time connection tolerates worst, and free tiers have both. Our catalog carries thirteen free-tier providers outside the top ten and the best reach 6.8 overall, below every provider we rank.

Setting It Up So It Helps Rather Than Hurts

The order matters. Steps two and three are the ones that decide whether the connection improves or gets worse.

  1. 01Measure your normal ping first, in the game itself, before the VPN is running. Without a baseline you cannot tell whether anything changed, and this is the step people skip and then argue about.
  2. 02Find roughly where the game hosts its servers for your region. Most competitive titles show the server region in the match or in network settings, and that region is what you are routing towards.
  3. 03Connect to a VPN server near the game's region rather than near yourself. This is the whole trick: a server near you adds a detour before the same long trip, while a server near the data centre can replace an inefficient route from your provider.
  4. 04Pick the low-overhead protocol in the app. WireGuard is listed by all ten providers we rank, and NordVPN and ExpressVPN each list a proprietary variant, NordLynx and Lightway. Leave OpenVPN for cases where something else is broken.
  5. 05Measure again and compare against your baseline. If the ping went up, try a different server in the same region before blaming the VPN: a single congested exit can account for the whole difference.
  6. 06For a console, set the VPN up on the router rather than hunting for a console app, and count devices before you buy. Surfshark, Private Internet Access, IPVanish and Windscribe allow unlimited simultaneous connections; NordVPN allows 10 and Proton VPN 10.
